Kicking the tires of history
The Ergo

Hi *|FNAME|*,

This month's big announcement is an Oryx feature I've wanted forever: Undo/Redo! Oryx now keeps track of the changes you make to individual keys in your layout. Read the details in the announcement, linked below.

On the hardware front, Robin wrote up a comprehensive guide all about o-rings and how they work. This is a fun, simple, and reversible thing you could do to drastically alter how your keyboard feels.

In this month's ZSA Loves, I shared a powerful Kindle alternative that made me leave my Kindle behind after years of devoted use.

Finally, I want to thank those of you who say nice things about ZSA and our keyboards. It's heartwarming, and it makes a real difference for us (that's how most people find out about us, because we don't advertise).

As always, thank you for reading, and you can write me any time. Just reply to this email, or reach me personally at ez@zsa.io.

All the best,
Erez

Introducing Per-Key Undo/Redo

Introducing Per-Key Undo/Redo

We've made history

This is one of those seemingly simple features that actually takes a boatload of engineering to get done, especially with an app that's as data-intensive as Oryx. The end result is simple, and I like to think, quite useful.

Installing o-rings on your keyboard

A complete guide

This latest instalment of Robin's Repairs is all about one of my favorite keyboard mods. We don't sell o-rings ourselves, nor do we recommend any specific brands here. The guide isn't even specific to our keyboards — just lots of unbiased, thorough information.

Layout of the month

Layout of the month: Colemak Coder

This layout uses the Colemak-DH keyboard configuration. It is designed to go "wide", attempting to use as many keys in as few layers as possible. It achieves this by supplanting actual Shift-key functionality with a logical proxy layer (implemented as two physical layers). My "Shift" keys aren't actual Shifts; they switch to a Shift-proxy layer where most keys are mapped to Shifted keys. I am a professional programmer. Many decisions herein reflect my preferences in that arena.

Things we liked

A better window switcher for macOS

Free and open-source (GPL). This window switcher is more powerful and customizable than the one built into macOS. You can replicate the Windows “look” but you can also do more. So handy.

AI-assisted search that’s actually good

I don’t use Perplexity for everything, but when I want to get a quick overview on a topic, it is helpful (and for me, better than Bing). It can use GPT-4, shows you the sources, lets you exclude sources you don’t like, and suggests good follow-up questions. $20/mo, but has a free tier, too.

A historical archive of flexible portion control sauce packets

Just what it says on the, uh, packet. This is a vast collection of carefully photographed packets of ketchup, mustard, mayo, and other single-serving sauces. Fascinating (reminds me of that Fight Club quote about "single-serving friends").

Discover Classical Art

A tour through public-domain classical art. You can download individual images in “normal resolution” (plenty, for just browsing) without paying or signing up. There are detailed artist bios and related works, as well.

That’s a garden shed?

Some incredible examples from the UK showing what a garden shed can be. Many are self-built from recycled materials. Yes, this is a marketing site, but it's well done.

It's a Planck EZ in the surf, on a beautiful South African beach. Don't try this at home.
