Per-Key and Dynamic Tapping Terms (and some great shoes, too)
The Ergo

Hi *|FNAME|*,

This month's big feature is equal parts nerdy and exciting. It lets you adapt multi-function (tap/hold) keys to your particular typing style, and to the way your typing changes throughout the day! So your keyboard slows down and speeds up right along with you. It's so cool. See the announcement below.

Another big announcement is an entire series of posts by Robin, called Robin's Repairs, offering in-depth tutorials on fixing your keyboard.

Finally, I published the first ZSA Loves post! It's all about my running shoes. Let me know what you thought about it, and the other announcements, at ez@zsa.io.

As always, thank you for reading!

All the best,
Erez

Introducing dynamic and per-key tapping terms

Using one key for multiple things is fundamental for ergonomics and comfort — and it has everything to do with timing. This month, we introduced two features that let you choose different timings for different keys on your board, as well as dynamically adjust timings as your typing patterns change throughout the day.

Diodes, switches, and sockets, oh my!

We strive to make keyboards that keep working for years and years — and a part of that is making them repairable. In this new series of in-depth guides, Robin takes you through a number of common repairs so you can keep your keyboard working long past its warranty, or easily repair a secondhand board. I just love the photos.

Featured User Interview

Chris Apple

Lead Audio Software Engineer
Did you ever wonder what sort of setup a pro audio engineer rocks? This was interesting to read, and a great source for headphone recommendations.
"One of my projects outside of work is training my fluffy old cat, Florence, to do tricks. She can now do 'come,' 'up,' 'high five,' and 'over' (jumping through my arms). Don’t believe you can teach an old cat new tricks? Check it out!"

Layout of the month

Layout of the month: SMK Colemak-DH

My main usage for my keyboard is typing reports, Excel, GIS and gaming. Therefore the layout was optimised for these activities. My layout retains all the keys from a classic keyboard, uses autoshift, macros, and other customisation available in Oryx. Most of my layout has been set, but I am still tweaking it 8 years later.

Things we liked

A magic-themed idle game

If you’ve been reading The Ergo for a little while, you may know I have a thing for idle clicker games. These are games where you essentially do nothing. Grimoire (available for iOS and Android) is a great example: Sparse graphics, satisfying mechanics, and a little story that ties it together. I’ve been playing for weeks.

A list of lists

To generate a list of highly recommended books, this site takes many lists from authoritative sources, ranks each list, and then finds the books that are most recommended across multiple lists. Both the sources and the ranking algorithm are laid out on the site. Many of these books are available for free, and the lists are available as CSV files.

A playground of shapes

This is such an addictive little toy. A free (no account needed) online canvas that lets you place many interesting shapes and explore patterns. Play with Penrose Tiles, Kolam Tiles, and many other polygons. Great for kids, too.

A take on Sudoko

The concept for Sumplete, as well as the name of the game and the actual code for the game, were all generated by ChatGPT. The game is fun, and the About page is worth reading for the chat logs.

Natural-language online calculator

Somewhere between a notepad and a spreadsheet. It's a free online calculator that works well with natural language. Reminded me of the polished Mac app Soulver, but slightly simpler and made for the Web.
