Total Teardown Tutorial
SEPTEMBER 2022
The Ergo

Hi *|FNAME|*,

I often say this: After working on a project for several years, I don't have a sense of how people might react to it once we release it. That's what the Platform release felt like, for me. We worked and worked and worked, and then we shared the Platform, and… Poof. Sold out, in 24 hours.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I wasn't expecting that. So, thank you to all of you who got a Platform. Thank you for supporting us, and for sharing your feedback. We're making more — the next batch will be much bigger (thousands of units) and shouldn't sell out so quickly.

In other news, check out our new teardown guide below. The design for the page, as well as the photos and videos (and the hand modeling!) are all by our multi-talented designer, Jo. I just love how it came out!

All the best,
Erez

Yay for repairability

This was a ton of work: Videos, photos, and detailed text instructions for tearing a Moonlander down to its components, and then putting it back together again. From removing a keycap to dismantling the thumb cluster to removing the main PCB, it's all there. It's easy to link to specific sections, too.

Featured User Interview

Kasimir Pihlasviita

Humanist/Technologist
There's a lot to like about Kasimir's interview, but I think my favorite part is his DIY Zip Kit alternative, made out of neoprene. Such a clean and minimal look!
"My favourite place in the world is the sauna at the summer cottage by a lake. It’s not quite in the wilderness, but secluded enough for me to undisturbed concentrate on one of my favourite activities: sitting on the porch watching the trees grow. "

Layout of the month

Layout of the month: HandsDownNeu HRM LNav RSym

I have tweaked my layout thousands of times after I got my Moonlander. This is merely the most current version of my tinkering, but it has served me well for my prose and programming needs.

Things we liked

A privacy-focused browser for macOS and iOS

An interesting hybrid: Runs on webKit (like Safari) but lets you install extensions for both Firefox and Chrome.

Wisdom of the crowd, applied to productivity

A fun little project allowing people to share productivity tips and vote on them. No account is needed for voting, making for some interesting results.

Magical music theory tools

A fun little music playground. There’s a Mini Music Machine to make melodies, a guitar/uke tuner, a virtual piano, a chord finder, and several other tools.

A collection of keyboard shortcuts for Mac, Windows, and websites.

Keyboard shortcuts used in numerous apps, formatted in clean "cheat sheet" style — from 1Password to Zoom. Did you know Netflix has a keyboard shortcut for “mute”? (It’s “M”.)

Tip: We have a subscriber-only link archive with all of the links we shared over the years. Just for you. ❤️
