Releasing something new can be scary
OCTOBER 2021
The Ergo

Hi *|FNAME|*,

Making something new and releasing it into the world can be scary. What will people think, what will they say? We agonize and work and test and polish, but the only way to really find out is to let people see what you made.

With that in mind, I have two things for you below. One is an important survey for creative professionals (not just ZSA customers — please share with your friends, I'd really appreciate it). I think we could be doing some pretty interesting things there.

The other is a Big Deal for us: An all-new version of Oryx. It's a big change to how editing your layout works, and has been in the works for months. The whole team put so much into it, and I am really happy with how it came out. Are you? Email me with any feedback, as usual — ez@zsa.io.

Finally, this month we released Tisha Talks Switches: Clear. Turns out MX Clear is kind of like a rollercoaster! Who'd have thought?

All the best,
Erez

Calling All Creatives

Calling All Creatives

How do you get stuff done?

Recently, we've been thinking about how we might make our keyboards more useful for people who spend their days editing photos and videos, creating 3D art, or making music. If your creative output happens outside of a text editor or email client, this survey is for you. It's short.

I have a lot to say about the new edit mode, but I decided not to write a blog post about it (maybe next month). Instead, I just want to show you what we did. Click the button to go to Oryx, and try editing your layout. What do you think?

Featured User Interview

Troy Kitch

Writer, Front End Developer
Beautiful woodworking, a limited-edition keycap set, and a thoughtful selection of software recommendations. What a great interview!
"I also recently built a small wooden frame for my keyboard because I often need to move it out of the way and wished to have a solution to put the keyboard quickly back in place at my preferred angles and spacing."

Layout of the month

Layout of the month: Main Layout

It's a multi-purpose layout designed for prose, programming and gaming. Its base layer is designed to match a standard keyboard, making it simple to adopt. I've been using this setup daily since 2019 and it's served me well.

Things we liked

Text-based window control

I've been looking for something better than BetterSnapTool and I think I found it. Configurable via a simple YAML file, and completely driven by the keyboard (Alfred). Lets me resize my windows and lay them out exactly how I want them.

Guess the language

Plays an audio snippet of someone talking, and then you have to choose what language you just heard. Some of these are really hard! Has a good pass-and-play mobile-friendly mode, too.

Physical phone experiments

A free mobile app that lets you see data from your phone's accelerometer, light sensor, and all other sensors. Can be used to create simple physics experiments wherever you are.

An Internet classic

You can do anything on Zombo.com. Anything is possible! Has its own Wikipedia entry for context. The unattainable is unknown at Zombo.com.

Documentaries, streamed for free

Works with charities to offer hundreds of award-winning documentaries you can watch for free. No ads either.

Tip: We have a subscriber-only link archive with all of the links we shared over the years. Just for you. ❤️
