Penultimate Mac Layout, new People site, and Tisha Talks Silver
JUNE 2021
The Ergo

Hi *|FNAME|*,

It's so satisfying to see a project move from a rough idea, through wireframes and mockups, and all the way to a working site in the browser. More on this below.

You'll also find an interview with Beth Glenfield, as well as a website that finally lets you answer the question "what's that plane overhead?"

In other news, Tisha Talks Switches: Silver is now out. We talk about Kailh Speed Silver (my daily driver), Cherry MX Silver, key testers, perception biases, tools vs. technique, and more.

As always, I hope you like this month's issue, and feel free to email me anytime — ez@zsa.io. Thank you for reading!

All the best,
Erez

Surprise me, search, and better typography

This has been in the making for a while: We just launched an all-new version of our People website, where we feature a new interview with an interesting person every week. I could not be happier with the design.

Featured User Interview

Beth Glenfield

Product Manager
Besides being a Product Manager at Puppet (yay for ops!), Beth serves as a director for Women Who Code Belfast, a scout for a VC fund, and a co-founder for a medtech startup.
"I am a huge VSCode fan, but couldn’t bring myself to use the built-in terminal, and instead use iTerm2 for all my zsh needs, loaded with Starship."

Layout of the month

Layout of the month: Penultimate Mac Layout

Why 'penultimate'? I have the thesis that no single layout will work for everyone. But we can get close! I think this layout is one step of personalization away from being your very own 'ultimate' layout.

Things we liked

Listen to all those MALM and BILLY

A charming narrator painstakingly describes every page in the Ikea catalog. "An arrow points to the table with a note that reads…" Wow.

Turn the classic boardgames you've got into new games you'll love

Take Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, Clue, and Scrabble, then turn them into entirely new games. Free to download.

A quote generator

An "artificial intelligence dedicated to generating unlimited amounts of unique inspirational quotes for endless enrichment of pointless human existence."

Scroll and click

Somewhere between an art project and a web toy, Trassel draws colorful squiggly lines on your screen as you scroll, and lets you switch brushes with a tap. This has obvious appeal for toddlers, but it's quite fun for grown-ups, too. Works well on mobile.

Tracking over 10,000 airplanes in real time

Planes overhead! This is a real-time view showing thousands and thousands of aircraft flying around. So cool. You can click individual planes to learn more about them and even see their flight path on the map— fascinating with small regional aircraft.

Tip: We have a subscriber-only link archive with all of the links we shared over the years. Just for you. ❤️

Wallpaper of the month

I just love the water in this one, and the whole vibe. You can read a lot into it. It's been my lock screen wallpaper for months (I've been waiting to share it).
